Burt Williamson & Chelsea Birkby | Edinburgh Preview, Bath

Two acts, two new hours, one small room before they head north for August. This is the kind of night where the material is still warm from the writing pad, which is exactly why it is worth being in the room.

Burt Williamson is a Bristol comic who takes himself seriously so you do not have to. Smart and stupid in roughly equal measure, he packs his sets with punchlines and a kind of know-it-all charm that should be annoying but somehow lands. Three Fringe runs in, with a couple of stand-up specials behind him, he is working up his next hour here. The Scotsman called his last set "clever in unguessable ways."

Chelsea Birkby is the one who turns an existential crisis into a slideshow and makes it funny. A Mock the Week writer and Amused Moose Best Debut winner, she trades in pop culture and philosophy with a high gag rate, and her last two Fringe shows pulled in award nominations and a stack of strong reviews. The Sunday Post pegged her as "a real star in the making."

Two distinct comic minds, one cheap ticket, and the chance to see the shows before Edinburgh does. Seats are limited and these nights tend to go.
