Ian Murphy

Ex-footballer and loser of £1M live on TV has seen me turn to stand up, as it’s cheaper than therapy

As seen at: Altitude Comedy Festival, Hot Water Comedy Club, tour support for Emmanuel Sonubi A rising star with a brilliantly sharp tongue, Ian Murphy brings a refreshingly original voice to the comedy circuit. At 54, this former footballer-turned-comic draws on a life full of twists—from losing £1 million live on TV to escaping his native Liverpool—for a set packed with 80s cynicism, modern-day bafflement and reflections on his “recovering scouseness.” Since bursting onto the scene, Ian has made serious waves—winning Devon Comedian of the Year 2023, finishing runner up in his semi final heat of the British Comedian of the Year 2025 and earning spots at top venues and festivals. With influences like Morecambe and Wise and Billy Connolly, Ian mixes old-school warmth with razor-sharp observations. “With a mix of relatable humour and quick comebacks, Ian keeps the audience laughing and entertained from beginning to end.” - Emmanuel Sonubi “Ian Murphy can host the hell out of a room. He brings the banter and the jokes.” - Jarred Christmas “An exceptionally confident entertainer, delivering humour that resonates brilliantly. A definite standout new act to keep an eye on!” – Torquay Comedy Club
